Absences Add Up! # Schooleveryday

In Deer Park, our goal is to ensure each student has the opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive! This also means each student deserves equal opportunity to participate and learn.  Regular attendance and participation, during any grade level, provide students an opportunity to learn and to reach for their dreams. When students are chronically absent, (missing 10% or more of the school year), starting as early as preschool and kindergarten, they are at risk of not reading proficiently by third grade, poor achievement in middle school, and dropping out of high school.

We also value our families as partners!  Our goal is to establish relationships with our students and families to support learning at home and at school.

Why is chronic absenteeism a problem for student learning and success?

  1. Absenteeism is a lost opportunity to learn.
  2. Reestablishing consistent, predictable routines for learning every day is essential to attendance and participation in all modes of learning.
  3. Absenteeism negatively affects and hinders the ability for our students to build strong, trusting relationships that promote a feeling of belonging with each other and the adults supporting them.
  4.  All students may suffer because the resulting classroom churn hampers teachers’ ability to engage all students and meet their learning needs.

We look forward to partnering with our families to ensure each student has the opportunity to maximize their learning.
