Counseling Services at Arcadia
What does an Elementary School Counselor do?
Individual student planning: School counselors coordinate ongoing systemic activities designed to assist students in establishing personal goals and developing future plans.
Responsive services: Responsive services are activities designed to meet students’ immediate needs and concerns. Responsive services may include counseling in individual or small-group settings or crisis response.
Indirect Student Services: Indirect services are provided on behalf of students as a result of the school counselors’ interactions with others including referrals for additional assistance, consultation and collaboration with parents, teachers, other educators and community organizations.
System Support: The systems support consists of the professional development; consultation, collaboration and teaming; and program management and operation activities that establish, maintain and enhance the total school counseling program.
School counselors adhere to strict ethical and legal standards in the performance of these duties.
School Counseling Curriculum
Curriculum consists of structured lessons designed to help students attain the desired competencies and to provide all students with the knowledge, attitudes and skills appropriate for their developmental level. Counseling curriculum is delivered alongside the school’s academic curriculum and is systematically presented in collaboration with educators in the classroom and in group activities.
Classroom Guidance – I am in classrooms every month teaching students lessons built around the Washington State Social Emotional Learning targets. Topics may include the following:
Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully, use self-talk to stay on task, and be assertive when asking for help with schoolwork.
Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others’ feelings. Students also learn how to take another’s perspective and how to show compassion.
Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger.
Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way.
